Nokia is back with a trio of Androids + a new 3310

MWC has started, meaning we are getting bombarded with many new phone announcements from Barcelona, but arguably, this one stands out a bit more.

That’s because Nokia is back, and has officially announced a global launch for 3 new Android smartphones, with a focus on making them “human-friendly” and instead of making these phones only look great on the spec sheets.

Nokia 6

Is basically a mid-range smartphone with some unique features and beautiful industrial unibody aluminium casing:
#1: 1080p 5.5″ fully-laminated display
#2: Dual speakers & dedicated amplifier with Dolby Atmos certification
#3: 16 MP main camera & 8 MP front-facing camera
#4: Fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button

The rest of the internals are nothing special, but definitely more than adequate for this class of device:
CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430
RAM: 3 GB (limited edition gets 4 GB)
Storage: 32 GB (limited edition gets 64 GB) + MicroSD card expansion (up to 128 GB)
Battery: 3000 mAh

Retail price: €229 (€299 for the Arte Black Limited Edition)

Nokia 5

A slightly less premium-looking smartphone than the 6, but still perfectly usable day-to-day phone, with again, some interesting stuff thrown in:
#1: 720p 5.2″ fully-laminated display
#2: 13 MP main camera & 8 MP front-facing camera
#3: Fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button

Internals are mostly similar to the Nokia 6:
CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430
RAM: 2 GB
Storage: 16 GB + MicroSD card expansion (up to 128 GB)
Battery: 3000 mAh

Retail price: €189

Nokia 3

Could be categorized as one of those older Lumias, with the rounded polycarbonate body, but this time round with an aluminium frame and Windows Phone swapped out for the more popular Android operating system. There are 2 main highlights:
#1: 720p 5.0″ fully-laminated display
#2: 8 MP main & front-facing cameras

Internals are visibly weaker than the ones of the previous 2 phones:
CPU: MTK 6737
RAM: 2 GB
Storage: 16 GB + MicroSD card expansion (up to 128 GB)
Battery: 2650 mAh

Retail price: €139

Other things

All phones have something in common. They use a “2.5D sculpted Gorilla Glass“, simply meaning the edges of the display cover glass are slightly bent (like on the iPhone 7), which makes the phone more comfortable to hold. All also feature Micro USB for charging, and apart from the obvious WiFi and Bluetooth, NFC hasn’t been left out either. On top of that, you will be able to choose between single SIM and dual SIM variants.

The best part is the focus on providing reliable software experience. The devices will ship with Android 7.0 Nougat right out of the box, with no bloatware, and Nokia guarantees timely software updates and monthly security patches. Google Assistant, which used to be exclusive to the Pixel line, is also on-board.

Nokia 3310

We all love the Nokia 3310, and in the age of super-delicate smartphones which barely make it through a day on a single charge, it has become somewhat of an icon. Nokia has decided to re-release the 3310. An all-new version for 2017, with all the beloved aspects of the original intact. 22 hours of call time, about a moth of stand-by, the traditional Nokia ringtone, and a new version of the most addictive game, the Snake. Something new is the 2.4″ color screen. Price point for the 3310 should be around €49, which shouldn’t be too off putting, for all the people sharing their excitement on social media…
